Haven't posted in awhile, but I just wanted to point out that thirty-thousand.org has a lot of great things to say about our House of Representatives. I'm all for increasing the size of the House to more accurately represent the people's views.

  • What????????????? They are wasting money when they need to spend that money on education and or health care.

  • I don't disagree that education and heath care are very important issues, however I don't understand why you seem to think that reporportionalizing the House will affect the budget. I suppose there is the issue of the representatives' salaries, however they don't make all that much in comparison to other budget needs. Changing the way the House is structured is a purely legal matter, requiring nothing in the way of money other than representatives' time.

  • why do we need more talking heads waisting time when we should have them out going to town meetings finding out what we need as a community and then going back to the hill and making real changes?

  • that's really the idea. If there are more representatives, they each represent a fewer number of constituents. Since they would have a smaller audience to market to, they would have to raise less money to campaign. Raising less money = less corporate or other moneyed party interest. Less external pressure = more attention paid to the needs and values of the people they're supposed to represent.

With more representatives in the house, each individual representative becomes less individually important. Egos fade, votes become more fair, and equality has a better chance. Talking heads are a product of large egos raised from large power bases. Spread out the power, and you spread out the ego.

  • what's with the big words and the big conclusions are you running for office? Do you always talk like that? How many kids do you have that you need to worry about education and how the money is spent on the hill? And I am sure you have the best health care money can buy. So what gives, why are you so worried about health care and education in America? I have no health care and three kids. So I have pleanty to be worried about.

  • I don't have any kids. I am, however, a product of the public school system. I remember being constantly frustrated as a student with the lack of funding we recieved, so I'm totally with you there.
As for health care, I went the last 3 years without any kind of insurance. Only recently have I gotten a job with health care. It's not bad, but neither is it great, and it's a large drain on my budget. I'm in favor of a single provider system, much like Canada or many European countries have.
The conclusions I draw are based on my reading of the website mentioned above, as well as from many other sources. As a US citizen, I have a vested interest in the nation's wellbeing.
Oh, and as for my use of language, my wife constantly bugs me about it too, so I'm sorry :).

  • good reply, I expected some kind of shout back. I agree that something should be done about health care. The people on the hill are getting the best of both education and health care. They can't understand what is to be a regular person and not have something. I am also a product of public education. I am even going out on a limb and sending one of my children to the new charter school. It has gotten such bad press. I went during school and got to go into one of the classes. They had smaller class sizes, laptops, and they all seemed interested in what they where learning. We'll see.

  • I can only hope for the best with the Charter School. I know from personally dealing with them that they had a shaky start, but they seem to be working it out. I hope your child gets alot out of their experience there. I also hope that the other schools in this area don't get overlooked.. Teaching in new and different ways is wonderful, but it is just an alternative, not nessecarily the best way. Personally, I think each student learns best in a way unique to that student. I hope our law and policy makers take that into consideration.
